The cult of the faux outdoorsy athletics

Aaronalfa_square

One thing you'll notice about people here is how they all like to dress with overpriced faux outdoorsy wear and accessories as if it somehow makes them seem like they are truly rugged or extreme.

The whole REI, North Face, [insert name of ski/snowboard] apparel and stickers all over your never left the pavement subaru/audi/yuppie puke car is so laughable I'd pity you all if it wasn't also so transparently stupid.

Talk to anyone who has these clothes on, or the myriad of racks and useless roof mounted storage devices on their vehicle and its readily apparent they have little or no experience with ANYTHING truly outdoorsy and extreme. This is further demonstrated by the endless number of idiots constantly on the news that go out in the not so distant woods and get lost or lose their children.

In so many only social and dating profiles, I always see guys list keywords like "ski/snowboard" and "camping" and "hiking" but when the rubber meets the road, these posers back out and admit they don't really do any of that stuff. They like to think their cute little jogs around greenlake make them 'athletic' and such. whatever.

As someone who grew up in Alaska, I find it oh so amusing how this whole phony outdoorsy culture has turned into a major money maker for all the local companies like REI which 20 years ago actually made real mountaniering gear, but is now simply an overpriced yuppie clothes store. Typical of the groupthink mentality of seattle, just about everyone owns one such item of clothing or accessory, but couldn't tell you why.

People here like to mock Sarah Palin, but if it came right down to really roughing it, I'd pit her againt the most experienced seattle weekend woodsman. Pathetic to say the least, just like every other fad here.
